The TTHP and the ENY ADHC, in conjunction with the NYCTDOR planning committee, will be hosting this year’s 10th Annual International Transgender Day of Remembrance in Brooklyn. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, an action that current media doesn’t quite perform. On this Day of Remembrance we publicly mourn and honor the lives of our brothers and sisters who might otherwise be forgotten. Through the vigil, we express love and respect for our people in the face of national indifference and hatred. The Day of Remembrance reminds non-transgender people that we are their sons, daughters, parents, friends and lovers. The Day of Remembrance gives our allies a chance to step forward with us and stand in vigil, memorializing those of us who’ve died by anti-transgender violence. In addition to following the tradition of the International founders, NYCTDOR also honors the lives of those who have weathered the storm and who continue to fight in the struggle to ensure others don't have to die due to indifference. We invite each and everyone to come out and share with us on this day as we honor our transgender family and friends and as we look forward with a renewed hope for the future. For more information or to volunteer to help, please contact Tracy Bumpus or Johnny Guaylupo via email. Bumpus@housingworks.org Guaylupo@housingworks.org On Saturday, May 24th 2008, it will be 4 years since Lakou New York radio program has been bringing alternative news, analysis, interviews, and reports directly from Site Soley, the largest "slum" in Haiti, to the Haitian community on a daily basis, Mondays to Fridays, 1pm - 2pm. We want to thank everyone who has in any way contributed to our work. It is this support which has allowed us to continue on for 4 years. We invite you to join us as we celebrate our anniversary on Saturday, May 24th 2008 from 7pm to 10pm at Stanley E. Clarke Elementary School (PS 399) located at 2707 Albemarle Rd. at the corner of Rogers Ave. and Albemarle Rd. in Brooklyn, NY. The theme for this year's celebration is "Ayibobo pou riches peyi nou"(Celebrating the richness of our country). Our special guest, coming from Haiti, will be Yverose Moise, founder of Afrikarib Productions which creates African themed "Kreyol" clothes and jewelry in Haiti. Yverose will present a segment on Haitian culture and self-empowerment every Wednesday on Lakou New York. Along with the products of Afrikarib, Yverose will be coming with Arts and Crafts from Women's collectives in different parts of Haiti: Jakmel, Kanperen, Latibonit, Kwa de¨bouke¨ and the workshop "Kay Atizan" located in Potoprens. This is an initiative of Lakou New York to showcase and support the work of Haitian artisans so lots of products will be available for sale. The event is a fundraising to support the work of Lakou NY so we are asking a donation of $20. In addition to products from Haiti, we will have authentic food, juices, and dessert from Haiti not usually available in New York. There will be no additional charge for the food. We hope you can join us. If you cannot come to the event we encourage you to send a donation to support Lakou New York at: Lakou New York PO Box 170406 Jamaica, NY 11417 For Lakou New York, Dahoud and Manno(If you don't know about Lakou NY, check us out at www.lakounewyork.com) |
